Concrete basics

Concrete can be more complex than meets the eye. Before placing your next order with us, take a moment to understand the basics of concrete and how to ensure a successful next pour.

Properties

Concrete is made from 3 components – Portland cement, aggregates (sand/gravel), and water. A common misconception about concrete is that it dries and gets hard. In reality, the hydraulic cement reacts with the water in a chemical process called hydration, resulting in the full-strength material known as concrete. If mixed properly, concrete is resistant to all weather events, fires, and chemicals. As well, concrete is great for energy efficiency because it absorbs and slowly releases heat.

Curing

Keeping your concrete moist and at the right temperature is crucial. Poor curing can lead to cracks and weak concrete. Below are some Rolling Mix best practices to ensure the highest quality concrete pours:

  • Establish a cure time with your Rolling Mix team and commit to that timeline
  • Sheeting and other materials may be deployed to aid the curing process
  • Your special situation may require other techniques to create the proper curing environment
  • Cold weather demands special attention; prepare for these events with guidance from Rolling Mix

Pouring & Weather

Weather conditions are important for a successful pour. Work with Rolling Mix and our expertise to manage inclement weather including cold conditions and extreme heat. We have poured in every weather condition, our track record and longevity in the market proves it. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Colours & Finishes

Concrete colours and finishes are plenty! Check out some of our favourites below:

Colour
  • Integral colour: Dye mixed into concrete before pour
  • Surface stains: Acid-based or water-based post-pour stains
  • Pigments: Powdered or liquid, mixed during batching
Finishes
  • Broom Finish: Standard for sidewalks/driveways - non-slip
  • Troweled: Smooth interior floors
  • Exposed Aggregate: Top layer removed to show stones
  • Stamped: Decorative pattern (brick, stone, etc.)

Bonus Fact

Modern Portland cement is the standard binder in concrete and has transformed the construction industry—used in everything from sidewalks to skyscrapers. Portland cement was invented in 1824 by heating limestone and clay in a kiln to form clinker, then grinding it into a powder.
